Urban Kestrel

A gaudy hunter
Floating in a poacher's crouch
Above the chimneys

Swimming through smoked air
Coaxing resultant stillness
From the headlong wind

A scrub vole sighted
Scratching through the sooted grass
Half a daily feast

Coordinates stored
Greedy eyes fix the quarry
The beak salivates

A brass-necked plummet
Through the mangled atmosphere
Greedy talons strike

A light-fingered flight
Ripped-up polluted groundkill
Feeds nested infants

Its shadow still there
A ghost of the immobile
Fixed by chemicals
